Sopore, Dec 05 (KNO): Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, on Friday urged residents to use water judiciously. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a key meeting in Sopore, DC Sherpa, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that major sources like the Shrunz line from Shrunz fall, previously flowing at 200-300 cusecs, now register below 10 inches due to deficient rainfall and snowfall over the past 2-3 years. This crisis affects not only Baramulla but the entire region, DC said. The Deputy Commissioner added that, they are planning to procure two additional tankers using the district mineral fund to bolster supply in a congested Sopore town until the AMRUT scheme becomes operational. TACKLING ILLEGAL MINING The Deputy Commissioner said that, illegal mining in riverbank areas like Doabgah harms the environment, government revenues and residents' safety by damaging embankments and homes. He outlined collaboration with irrigation, flood control, DMO and police for regulated operations that balance employment, environmental protection and treasury safeguards, rather than blanket closures. VENDOR REHABILITATION EFFORTS The DC said that vendors in Sopore have been demanding safe town-center spots for livelihood and efforts are on to rehabilitate them. He, said that ADC and SSP are jointly scouting congested inner-town locations to accommodate as many as possible—(KNO)
